Welcome to the New Website

SMR Website 12 Comments

A new deer season this fall and a new website for the ranch! Thanks for visiting and we hope you’ll give us a call to talk further. Still a few hunts available for Fall 2015 and we’re also booking for 2016. With the Texas Park & Wildlife MLD Level 3 status, our deer season runs October 3-February 28 for this year (2015-2016 season). Both rifle and bow hunts are allowed throughout the season dates. And don’t worry if you’ve already tagged out your Whitetail license–you’ll use our quota tags for all Whitetail hunts at SMR.

We’re adding content to the site frequently and hope you’ll check back soon for updates. Next up, we’ll be filling out the mass of information on our exotics hunts. With so many trophy animals to hunt, there are a number of questions we believe we can answer and look forward to bringing that content to you. On the Whitetails side of things, we’ll be going into further detail on the ranch and our management of the deer, as well as some of the details related to booking a hunt in South Texas.

Hi Helen. Yes the ranch offers nature/birding tours as well as photography workshops and day-trips. The fee depends on whether you are birding only or doing photography out of our 11 photo blinds. The photo blinds are for either songbirds, raptors (hawks, caracaras, etc.), Whitetail Deer, or Exotic big-game. Birding and photography tours are typically scheduled in 2 seasons: Spring is primarily for songbirds and raptors / Fall is prime time for our Whitetail Deer photography trips. We’ll be building a website for the nature/photo side of the business soon, but to find out more please contact Justin Parker (Ranch Manager). Thanks for the message Helen and we’d love to talk with your further.

  1. I can honestly say with 100% truth that this place is without a doubt one of the most beautiful ranches in South Texas I have ever been on! The owners of the ranch are some of the most hospitable people I have ever met! Book a hunt here, you will not regret it!

  2. When has spring bird migration been about the best, historically? Give me some idea of what a room and meals costs for 2 people during bird migration. We are experienced birders and besides birding by car would probably like to use a few of your blinds.

Although we have offered trips for birding in the past, I believe you are looking for a different ranch.

There has been a lot of confusion this year between us and another ranch in Texas called “Santa Margarita Ranch.” That ranch is located in Starr county, at the Southern tip of the state and has gotten attention with sightings of Brown Jays and many other rare birds. Unfortunately I don’t have the contact information for that ranch, but I want to give you this information so you can find them another way. Best wishes.

  3. I am interested in seeing/hearing bare throated tiger heron, motted owl, golden crowned warbler, blue bunting, gray collared beccard, buff breated sandpiper, crimson collared grosbeak
I am partially disabled and cannot walked rugged trails. the list of birds I would like to see is long a (I was down there I couple weeks ago, I was at the ranch 5 year ago saw brown Jay so (I don’t need to see this bird). of the bird I list above what are chances of seeing or hearing them close to you road system.

  4. I was wondering what your schedule was next week for birding tours for the Bare-th Tiger Heron and Mottled Owl as well as the other cool birds you have there.

    Is housing available as well?

    Thank you,

    Lou Truex
